Electrical Installation Certification

Electrical installation certification is the process that verifies that a property's electrical system complies with all applicable technical standards and safety requirements in force in Portugal.

This process ensures that the installation is prepared to operate safely, efficiently, and in accordance with the needs of the property, protecting both people and equipment.

Compliance of the electrical installation is confirmed through the issuance of a Declaration of Responsibility by a qualified technician and, where applicable, an Inspection Report carried out by an accredited inspection body.

These documents confirm that the installation has been executed in accordance with the applicable technical regulations, namely the Low Voltage Electrical Installations Technical Rules, and are often required for:

Connection to the electrical grid
Increase of contracted power capacity
Modifications or legalization of electrical installations

The legal framework is based on the Decree-Law No. 96/2017, which simplified several procedures and reinforced the responsibility of certified technicians and companies.

Currently, the sector is supervised by the DGEG, while the ERSE regulates the energy market. Inspections, when required, are carried out by duly accredited inspection bodies.

It is important to note that the requirement for inspections depends on the type of installation. In standard residential properties, periodic inspections are generally not mandatory, unlike in industrial or public-use installations, where regular inspections may be required.

Benefits of Electrical Installation Certification
